How L'Oreal Uses Social Media for Recruitment [Case Study]

More than words: the art and science of infographics

by Emma Firth @ FirstWord Media

Infographics are the most effective medium for the mass of information available in the age of Big Data The sheer volume of available data creates new challenges for showcasing vast or complicated narratives in an engaging way. Striking visuals draw in eyes and views effectively, but are not sufficiently sophisticated to explain complex or weighty issues. Text, meanwhile, offers infinite space, but huge blocks of it on a page can be an instant reader turn-off. Enter the infographic: the prime example of a medium that is more than the sum of its parts. Visual elements combine with minimal text to explain even complex subject matter effectively. And science agrees. In a 2010 study into why understanding of health risks was better when graphics were used as well as text, Barbara M Miller and Brooke Barnett noted: “On their own, text and graphics are both useful yet imperfect methods for communication… combining text and graphics allows communicators to take advantage of each medium’s strengths and diminish each medium’s weaknesses.” But that’s not to say they should – or indeed can – be used to illustrate just any story. Stef Bayley, former graphics editor of the Sunday Telegraph and FirstWord’s visuals specialist, [...]

FirstWord’s weekly content marketing roundup: 7 July

by James Quilter @ FirstWord Media

This week’s roundup includes a nicely thought out list of B2B content marketing examples, a clarion call for mobile and an interesting initiative from Google. Google pushes native advertising Google has launched an interesting product for brands looking to push content marketing – rather than ads – into the web. Marketing Land has put together a good overview, but in a nutshell it uses Google’s ‘matched content’ product and allows content marketing to be run within a participating website. Crucially, it will match the look and feel of the site. Gripping stuff. Read more here Best examples of B2B content marketing Sometimes it’s quite hard to pick out decent examples of B2B content marketing. Chiefly, this is because so much of it goes under the wire. But HubSpot has given it a good go. Particular favourites here include Deloitte and Next View Ventures. There’s a lot of thought on strategy out there. But really all you need to do is see what has worked well for other people. Standing on the shoulders of giants and all that. Read more Go mobile with your content marketing If there’s one thing most content marketers, digital marketers, web devs and friends are guilty of [...]

Ode to the dead sites of the Labour leadership campaign

by James Quilter @ FirstWord Media

Every day thousands of web domains come on to the open market after their owners fail to extend them. This goes by the affectionate name of link rot. Buyers can do what they like with the page. Sometimes this can be at odds with the original purpose and other sites linking back to the domain. This is something that may leave former Labour leadership hopeful Andy Burnham wondering should he ever decide to go for the top job again. He won’t be able to use andy4labour.co.uk – not unless he’s planning to campaign on a platform of free tracksuits, hoodies and trainers. This is because the domain behind Burnham’s doomed 2015 campaign for the Labour leadership has been acquired by an online shop selling the latest in sports fashion. Thus, this… … has become this: Even though Corbyn won the leadership in September 2015, Burnham kept the site live until at least April 2016. This may have been because no one could be bothered to switch it off. When you’ve had a bad result, the last thing you want to do is get a broom out. Then in August an eagle-eyed retail entrepreneur snapped up the url and turned it [...]

Online content marketing – unlock the power of your website

by James Quilter @ FirstWord Media

Producing good online content marketing requires you to approach your content production like a journalist. All well and good, but what happens when it’s time to put your content onto the site and you find yourself faced with something out of The Matrix? Many commercial websites, especially in B2B, have been designed as a static showcase. Quite often they will include lots of fancy Javascript-based animation and design. Good design is intended to look good. But it can prove awkward when it comes to putting up regular articles. This can play havoc with your content marketing strategy. If you are building up your content library and think you might need to introduce some structure, this article provides a checklist for what you are likely to need. Go through it before briefing the developer. Site CMS Make sure your developer has created an easy-to-use CMS for uploading stories. You don’t want a site that is so complicated on the backend that you have to brief a developer just to upload a 150-word blog. Website design Probably the most obvious and yet most overlooked point. Commercial sites are fundamentally designed to showcase the company and its products. All too often the content [...]
