Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

by mariayagoda @ PEOPLE.com

Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.

Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.

“Families can try out their favorite cookie flavors in the form of brownies, cupcakes, and blondies, while they wait for the real thing once a year during Girl Scout Cookie season,” said Girl Scouts of the USA chief revenue officer Barry Horowitz in a statement.

GSC loyalists are, to put it mildly, freaking out.

The mixes, now available nationwide, retail for $3.29 each — almost $2 less than what you’d pay for a box of cookies.

Easily the best part of all this news is the fact that we will now be able to eat Girl Scout Cookie dough, something we never thought would be possible in our lifetimes!

Can you tell we’re excited about it?

Obamacare wrecking crew has new legislative wrinkles

by @ Arkansas news, politics, opinion, restaurants, music, movies and art, Arkansas Times

Backers of the Graham-Cassidy legislation to repeal Obamacare are madly trying to amend the bill to win over enough Republican senators for passage.

The plan:

* Payola for Alaska, Kentucky, Arizona and Maine, with senators deeply skeptical.

* Absolute clarity that states may end the guarantees of coverage of pre-existing medical conditions without penalty.

* The end of Medicaid over time as we know it.

* No independent assessment of the legislation by the Congressional Budget Office before a vote. No meaningful debate.

* Disingenuous depictions of money provided by the legislation.

Axios lays out the details here. They amount to another debunking of Gov. Asa Hutchinson's insistence that the bill isn't bad for Arkansas, which has led the nation in providing health security to its people through adoption of the Obamacare Medicaid expansion. Hutchinson is already intent on cutting beneficiaries by 20 percent or more and is apparently comfortable with still more draconian cuts. Why he hasn't gotten some special treatment for Arkansas, after claiming a vital role in the shaping of the bill, is a question someone might ask him at Central High this morning. (Along with "When will Little Rock get its schools back?")

From Axios:

According to Graham and Cassidy's analysis, the revised bill would direct more money to Alaska, Arizona, Kentucky and Maine, compared with earlier versions. But it would still reduce overall federal funding to those states — whose Republican senators are, for now, opposed to the bill or undecided.

Although the state-by-state numbers being circulated show these states faring well, the Kaiser Family Foundation's Larry Levitt called them "pretty misleading," as they don't take into account the per-person cap on federal Medicaid funding. They also add state savings to the block grants under the bill, but don't include them in the current law baseline, meaning the comparison isn't apples to apples.

The revisions also ramped up some of the regulatory rollbacks needed to help win conservative votes. Sen. Ted Cruz said earlier today that he's not yet on board with the legislation.

More here from Vox on the chaos this bill would cause.

Tutu-Wearing Grandma, 98, Pops Champagne and Devours Cake in Colorful Birthday Shoot: ‘She Is 100 Percent Girly-Girl’

by Jason Duaine Hahn @ PEOPLE.com

At just two years shy of becoming a centenarian, Grandma Gladys still knows how to party, and her loving granddaughter is by her side to spark up the fun.

To celebrate Gladys’ 98th birthday on September 26, her granddaughter, Shannon Weikle, treated her to a colorful photoshoot—which featured Gladys dying her hair blue, sipping Prosecco straight from the bottle and destroying a cake with her bare hands.

“A lot of my friends are having babies and are either doing newborn photoshoots or smash cakes for their child’s first birthday,” Weikle, 29, of Bowie, Maryland, tells PEOPLE. “She’s the person I do all these fun things with, and that’s where the idea came in, and I wanted to do something special for her.”

Weikle has done special things to mark her grandmother’s birthday over the years, such as getting matching maple leaf tattoos on their wrists when Gladys turned 95 in 2014—which almost didn’t happen because the shop needed a copy of Gladys’ ID to prove she was over 18, but she didn’t have one (fortunately, they found other means). They’ve also discussed going big for her 100th birthday: for that milestone, Weikle is currently trying to convince her grandmother to go skydiving. While Gladys needs some more time to come around to that idea, she was totally game for a photoshoot where she could get dolled up.

“She is 100 percent girly-girl,” Weikle explains. “She loves to look nice and get dressed up, I thought the photoshoot would be a fun way for her to commemorate the occasion.”

But “feisty” Gladys wasn’t too keen when it came to dying her silver hair blue for the shoot.

“I came over and I showed her the dye, and we just went to work,” Weikle says. “When she saw herself, she was mortified!”

Still, Gladys remained a trooper and went through with her granddaughter’s plan.

The photos, taken by Maryland photographer Cara Lynn McGilvrey, show a beaming Gladys surrounded by green forestry and colorful balloons, and sipping a little wine from a glass that reads, “98 and looking for a date.” Well, in truth, she sipped more than just a little wine.

“I thought wine might be good because it would calm her nerves since she was a little nervous about getting her picture taken,” Weikle says. “We poured her a glass of wine to sip on and take pictures with, and then she just chugged it—she was pretty excited when we drove home!”

When McGilvrey posted the photo set to her Facebook page, they received a lot of attention: the post has garnered more than 16,000 likes and 3,000 comments, and many commenters expressed that they, too, wanted to put on similar shoots for their grandmothers.

Weikle says Gladys lights up when she hears about all of the attention she’s been getting, and they are both thankful the response has been nothing but positive.

“I’ll read her the comments and she’ll just giggle and can’t believe so many people care about what she’s doing,” Weikle says. “She thought people would think she had gone crazy. Hopefully, this inspires people to realize they are never too old to do anything or to enjoy life.”

Country Duo Big & Rich Show Us Their Softer Side and Reveal Who’s More Romantic

by Mariah Haas @ PEOPLE.com

When it comes to country duo Big & Rich’s soft side, Big Kenny and John Rich admit that their music is actually inspired by that special someone.

“A few songs in there specifically for me, I wrote ‘em for my woman,” Kenny tells PEOPLE Now. “Having someone in my life like my wife, like John’s, well you want those kind of songs that will make ‘em feel good about everything.”

As for which bandmate is more romantic?  “He’s the universal minister of love,” shares Rich. “You really can’t compete with that.”

Explains Kenny: “Well you know there’s one thing to say you’re romantic then there’s another thing to you know have someone in your life that makes you want to be romantic and my woman makes me want to be romantic.”

Specifically, Kenny, says that the duo’s new song, “Turns Me On,” off of their latest album Did It For the Party was inspired by his wife of 12 years, Christiev Carothers.

“It talks about the crazy things,” shares Kenny. “Like clothes left on the floor or brush in the sink or things like that you would think would bother me—but no. ‘It turns me on. I ain’t lying.’”

Teases Rich: “Kenny likes it.”

Along with their romantic songs, Big & Rich are also known for their more risqué tunes, including their hit party anthem, “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy).”

“There’s been just hundreds of thousands of horses saved,” Kenny says of the smash single, which first debuted 13 years ago.

“Equality for equines,” explains Rich. “Equine equality.”

“And it also somehow may have started a whole new baby boom,” adds Kenny.

And when it came to their families’ reactions to the suggestive lyrics, Rich admits they weren’t too concerned.

“Granny’s a little risqué herself,” shares Rich. “Granny will flat-out tell you.”

He continues: And my dad’s a preacher, so the first time he heard ‘Save a Horse (Ride A Cowboy),’ he gave me that: ‘You sure you ought to be…’ Course I told him, ‘You know 10 percent everything it makes goes back to the church daddy.’ And he goes, ‘As long as you’re doing that.’”

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com

Chip and Joanna Gaines are the definition of marriage goals, but their relationship didn’t necessarily have a fairytale start.

In the first chapter of The Magnolia Storyreleased as a sneak peek today, the Fixer Upper dream team spills the details of how they met — and it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

Joanna agreed to go out on a date with Chip after meeting him and his roommate “Hot John” — who she actually tried to approach minutes earlier, but was too shy — in the waiting room of her dad’s auto shop. She had second thoughts, however, after Chip arrived an hour and a half late to pick her up.

“He didn’t apologize for being late, either. He had so much confidence. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. Only Chip could be an hour and a half late and have no one mad about it,” Joanna writes.

The chapter continues to describe the timeline of their relationship, which didn’t actually start until months after they first went out, when Chip (in typical guy fashion) finally called Joanna back.

“I’d made a bet with Hot John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back,” Chip writes “I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That’s the only reason I didn’t call.”

After they went out a second time, the rest was history.

Taylor Swift Reveals One of the ‘Best Ideas’ That Got Left Out of ‘Look’ Video in BTS Clip (It Involves Her Cat!)

by Melody Chiu @ PEOPLE.com

Taylor Swift‘s music video for her smash hit single “Look What You Made Me Do” was meticulously planned down to the last detail, but in a new behind the scenes clip from the video shoot the superstar reveals one little change she would have made.

“The absolute idiocy of this scene is that we’re, like, robbing a streaming company as if they have a vault of cash and all the girls are shoving money into their really well-coordinated, primary color, awesome Gucci outfits wearing ridiculous kitten masks,” Swift says in the clip shared exclusively with PEOPLE.

Holding up her own cat mask, Swift realizes the ears don’t quite match those of her beloved feline, Olivia (named after Law & Order: SVU‘s Olivia Benson).

“We really, really should’ve stapled her ears!” exclaims Swift, who has two Scottish Fold cats. “God, you get the best ideas after it’s too late!”

The star, 27, also jokes around with her extras in the video and marvels over their costumes. “Where did we find this? It’s genius,” she says.

In the “Stream Co.” scene, Swift’s nails are painted a green shade similar to Spotify’s logo. After removing her entire catalog from Spotify in 2014 and explaining to TIME “there should be an inherent value placed on art,” Swift celebrated selling more than 10 million copies of her Grammy-winning album 1989 by making her entire back catalog available to all streaming services in June.

Swift released the first single off her new album Reputation (out Nov. 10) on Aug. 25, and the song racked up just under 8 million streams on that day alone.

This Is Us Predicted the Kardashian-Jenner Baby Boom: 'Next Week, There'll Be a Bazillion More of Them'

by Aurelie Corinthios @ PEOPLE.com

The universe works in mysterious ways — and in an almost unbelievable sequence of events, the much-anticipated season 2 premiere of This Is Us predicted a Kardashian-Jenner baby boom just hours after news broke that Khloé Kardashian is pregnant.

SPOILER ALERT: The following story contains details from Tuesday’s season premiere of This Is Us.

In a scene from Tuesday’s season premiere of the beloved NBC series, Justin Hartley‘s character Kevin Pearson FaceTimed his girlfriend Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) after leaving the set of his movie in Los Angeles, asking her if there’s any chance she could fly in. She told him she couldn’t make it because her mom is sick, bemoaning the fact that she would be missing out on celeb-spotting a Kardashian.

“The Kardashians aren’t going anywhere,” he reassured her. “They’re like gremlins — I promise next week there will be a bazillion more of them.”

Ironically, the scene was filmed long before news broke Friday that Kris Jenner‘s youngest daughter Kylie, 20, is expecting a baby girl with her rapper boyfriend Travis Scott. News of Kylie’s pregnancy was swiftly followed by her older sister Khloé’s own baby news on Tuesday: The 33-year-old reality star is expecting a baby with her boyfriend, Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristan Thompson. And sister Kim Kardashian West, 36, is expecting her third child with husband Kanye West in January via a surrogate.

Though none of the women have publicly commented on the news, a source told PEOPLE on Tuesday that “over the moon” Kylie and Khloé are both “due around the same time.”

“They are approximately four months along,” the source said. “Kylie loves how close-knit her family is and is thrilled to bring that to her own family. She feels more prepared than ever, especially since she will be sharing this journey with Khloé.”

“They are looking at it like a unifying experience for them as sisters,” the source added. “Getting pregnant at the same time was totally unplanned, but they are really happy about it.”

On Monday, the mother-to-be, 33, shared a photo of Lake Erie on Snapchat along with the caption: “I’m back!”

And on Tuesday, Thompson, 26, was spotted at the first day of the Cleveland Cavaliers training camp in Independence. The power forward practiced with teammates LeBron James, Richard Jefferson, Kyle Korver and J.R. Smith. Newest team member Dwyane Wade was not in attendance.

Thompson, who is already a father to 9-month-old son Prince Oliver with his ex-girlfriend Jordan Craig, spoke to the media but did not discuss his relationship with Kardashian or the baby news.

“I got to take my two months and enjoy them. Be with my family and decompress,” he said about his off-season this year. “Because 12 months of basketball will drive you nuts.”

The father-to-be also attended media day on Monday, during which he took new portraits for the 2018 season.

Kardashian and Thompson, who have been dating since September 2016, “are absolutely thrilled” about the baby news, according to a source.

“This is something Khloé has wanted for years and years and yet it’s more than that: she didn’t want it unless she was in the right relationship for it. She never let it happen with Lamar, intentionally, and she never considered it with James or French or anyone else she has seen,” a source previously told PEOPLE about Khloé’s marriage to Lamar Odom and her past romances with James Harden and French Montana.

Khloé’s pregnancy comes days after sources confirmed to PEOPLE on Friday that Kylie is expecting a baby girl with her boyfriend Travis Scott. In fact, the sisters are due around the same time.

“Kylie is over the moon about her pregnancy. Khloé and Kylie are both due around the same time. They are approximately four months along,” an insider close to the family recently told PEOPLE.

“Kylie loves how close-knit her family is and is thrilled to bring that to her own family. She feels more prepared than ever, especially since she will be sharing this journey with Khloé,” the insider said, adding, “They are looking at it like a unifying experience for them as sisters.”

Sister Kim Kardashian West and her husband Kanye West are also expecting. The couple, who married in May 2014, will be welcoming their third child after hiring a surrogate to help them expand their family. They are already parents to 4-year-old daughter North West and 21-month-old son Saint West.

Khloé recently revealed that Cleveland has become her home away from home during a recent appearance on Steve Harvey‘s show, Steve.

“I do really love Cleveland, I really enjoy it,” she told Harvey about jetting back and forth from Los Angeles to Ohio. “I love the best of both worlds.”

A source told PEOPLE in July that Kardashian and Thompson are house-hunting together. They’re not moving in together officially just yet, but the athlete (who has a home in Cleveland) is looking to rent a place in Los Angeles, according to the insider.

“Khloé is just the happiest,” said the source. “She loves spending every day with Tristan.”

Nate Berkus Shares How His Entertaining Style Has Changed Since Welcoming Daughter Poppy

by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com

Nate Berkus is the expert on all things party planning. But since becoming a father to one-year-old daughter, Poppy, the designer’s go-to entertaining style has had a few changes.

“We entertain around her nap schedule now,” Berkus, artistic advisor for LG Studio, told PEOPLE at a breakfast on June 8, which celebrated the sleek line of high-end appliances he helped design.

But when Poppy isn’t snoozing, Berkus, 44, and husband Jeremiah Brent, 31, keep her busy with poolside play dates that are a far cry from a formal outdoor gathering.

“Our home is now filled with blow up toys from Target in the pool as opposed to margaritas,” Berkus said.

And the menu planning is even simpler.

“We throw food on the barbecue, we’ve actually even had a taco truck come once,” Berkus said. “We do put out snacks for the little ones, and they sit and throw them in the pool.”

Obamacare wrecking crew has new legislative wrinkles

by @ Arkansas Blog, Arkansas Times

From 'Fake-Trying' to Get Pregnant with her Ex to Offering to be Kim's Surrogate: Khloé Kardashian's Long Journey to Motherhood

From 'Fake-Trying' to Get Pregnant with her Ex to Offering to be Kim's Surrogate: Khloé Kardashian's Long Journey to Motherhood

by Christina Dugan @ PEOPLE.com

Being a mom has always seemed to be in the back of Khloé Kardashian’s mind, but the road to motherhood hasn’t always been easy.

On Tuesday, multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, 33, and her NBA boyfriend, Tristan Thompson — whom she has been dating since September 2016 — will be expecting their first child together.

“Yes, Khloe and Tristan are expecting and they are absolutely thrilled,” a source tells PEOPLE. “This isn’t something they were in a rush to announce to the whole world, and it’s only been in just the past week or so that they’ve felt comfortable telling most of their inner circle. Things were complicated a bit by Kylie’s announcement as they don’t want to be seen as intruding on that moment for her but it is now reaching a point where Khloe doesn’t want to be openly lying to people, and just staying quiet isn’t going to work anymore.”

Adding, “This is something Khloe has wanted for years and years and yet it’s more than that: she didn’t want it unless she was in the right relationship for it. She never let it happen with Lamar, intentionally, and she never considered it with James or French or anyone else she has seen. But this is such a wonderful moment for her: not only is she going to be a mother, she is going to be raising a child with a man she truly loves. Everyone is over the moon for them both.”

But the journey leading up to her pregnancy was difficult, emotionally-exhausting, and frustrating at times.

In the season 9 finale of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kardashian admitted she “fake-tried” to get pregnant with ex-husband Lamar Odom.

“I was married, but I knew the circumstances weren’t the healthiest so I just kept pretending I was doing it,” said Kardashian, who wed Odom, 37, in 2009 after a whirlwind, month-long courtship.

“When I was doing my fertility treatments, they were more so for Lamar,” she added. “I had to stop because there was much deeper stuff that was happening in our marriage.”

Kardashian and Odom’s marriage came to an end after the former basketball player’s cheating scandal and drug relapse – causing her file for divorce in 2013.

“I knew it wasn’t the right situation to bring a child into, and I think I’ve done a lot of covering up for him — even when it made me look like I was the problem,” says Khloé in the clip. “But I was fine taking on that burden on my shoulders, because he had a lot of other deeper s— to deal with.”

Kardashian eventually moved on with rapper French Montana, but the pregnancy rumors continued to follow her.

“I feel like I’ve been pregnant for six years!” the reality star told PEOPLE in 2014. “I used to get offended, like, ‘Do I look fat today?’ or ‘Why are they saying that?’ But they just say it. Before I was like, ‘Do I have a baby bump? Is my belly sticking out?’ But no. I mean, one day the rumor will be true, I hope, but who knows? Until then, it is what it is.”

But fears of not being able to conceive continued to haunt the youngest Kardashian sister.

During last season’s KUWTK,  Kim Kardashian West took her sister to her fertility specialist to explore the possibility of Khloé becoming her surrogate — where Khloé received some unsettling news about her own fertility.

After an unscheduled ultraound, the doctor informs Khloé that there are fewer follicles in her uterus for a woman her age.

“Shut the f— up,” Khloé responded. “This is definitely not all how I thought this appointment was going to go. What if I can’t get pregnant?”

But, despite the tough road, Kardashian’s dream of becoming a mom is slowly unfolding.

Kardashian’s pregnancy comes days after sources confirmed to PEOPLE on Friday that Kylie Jenner is expecting a baby girl with her boyfriend Travis Scott. She is due in February.

Kim Kardashian West and husband Kanye West are expecting their third child after hiring a surrogate to help them expand their family.

Did we know (and understand) more when we knew less?

by @ Arkansas news, politics, opinion, restaurants, music, movies and art, Arkansas Times

When I was a young sprout in Missouri, we subscribed to two newspapers, a morning edition and one that came out in the afternoon. We also had the morning and evening news on television. When we were stationed in Germany in the early 70s we had the Stars and Stripes newspaper, Time, Newsweek and LIFE magazines to keep us abreast of life back in the sates and around the world. We also had the news on American Forces TV and radio. On Sunday we’d grab a copy of the international edition of the New York Herald Tribune.

And no, for the ill-informed who just love a good cliche to round out their day, neither Stars and Stripes or the news of Armed Forces radio/TV were propaganda services. Still, I suppose that simple declaration won’t convince those who find comfort in cliches, whether they know anything about the subject or not.

Today, in addition to newspapers, magazines and the nightly newscast on the major networks, we have cable outlets devoted to the 24 hour news cycle - basically repeating stuff over and over and over again. Often, what is labeled as “Breaking News” is merely coverage of something that may well have happened yesterday.

Indeed (as as the philosopher Teal’c of Chulak was wont to say) the text banner running along the bottom of the screen often simply regurgitates yesterdays’s news.

The rest of the time? Analysis of the news, all too often from purely partisan points of view. Many viewers swear emotional allegiance to these outlets because of the partisan analysis.

And then we get online news.

News geared towards liberals.

Conservatives.

Libertarians.

Freedom lovers.

News for vegetarians.

News for Second Amendment advocates.

News for atheists.

News from a religious point of view.

News for people who feel nothing but contempt for anyone who doesn’t see the world as they do.

Lots of news, and yet, just a glance at Facebook and many online forums shows that we are less informed than ever. We don’t know an awful lot about the world in general, and with more and more people proudly proclaiming that they don’t read the local newspaper or watch TV news, we have all too many activists whose knowledge about their own community wouldn’t fill a thimble.

Such “activists” are not to be depended upon.

At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon, I remember a time when folks were surprisingly well-informed about the world around them, considering the amount of information we got, compared to what we receive now. Today we drown in a sea of trivia, opinion, and ignorant online comments from those whose grasp of anything approximating actual knowledge of history or world events is laughable.

Want to know more about the world? My advice would be to limit yourself to a handful of sources that you trust, and tune out most of the noise.

Especially online.
