Sebastian Barry

by Dominic McGrath @ The University Times

Sebastian Barry admits that “reading Matthew Arnold” is probably not the answer most people give when asked why they ended up in Trinity. The 19th-century poet recommended that, for any person to become a writer, they should first study ancient and modern literature. Taking this advice on board, a slightly bewildered Barry found himself in Trinity. Thinking back to his decision now, he laughs that this was his inspiration to attend university. “I was a very strange child”, he muses. Clearly the recommendation worked, however, as he boasts an incredibly successful body of work including, most recently, having been longlisted for the Man Booker prize,... Read more »

Should they achieve just under 1,000 signatures – 3.5 per cent of the student population in UCD – the petition will be handed to the union’s returning officer and then a referendum will be held within a two-to-four week period. The news is something of a mixed bag. Confirmation that the referendum will be held in isolation comes as a relief, as appending the question with other votes would detract focus from the crucial and sensitive issue that is the eighth amendment. Given that pro-choice campaigners have long been accusing the government of employing delay tactics on the issue of abortion, it’s also good to see that, at... Read more »

I Won’t Saddle Students With “Enormous Debt”, Varadkar Tells Trinity on 425th Anniversary

by Eleanor O'Mahony @ The University Times

On the 425th anniversary of Trinity’s foundation, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar told an audience in the College that he couldn’t support a funding model that would see students “saddled with enormous debt”. The thorny issue of a funding model has dominated debate in the higher education sector over the last several years. Varadkar’s comments today, while fleeting, suggest that Ireland should not expect to see a UK-style loan system introduced. Plans for Cunningham House Development Reach New Stage

by Dominic McGrath @ The University Times

Plans to demolish and rebuild Cunningham House and develop new accommodation in Trinity Hall have reached a new stage, with a business case currently being worked on for a project that has made slow progress over the last few years.
